Getting to and around Belize

Most people arrive at the Phillip Goldson International Airport in Ladyville, 10 miles north of Belize City on non-stop direct flights from the United States:

American Airlines: From Dallas and Miami
Continental: From Houston (and Newark on Saturdays during high season)
Delta: Atlanta
US Air: Charlotte, NC
TACA: Houston and Central American countries via El Salvador

There are regularly scheduled domestic flights to San Pedro, Caye Caulker, Caye Chapel, Dangriga, Placencia, Punta Gorda, Corozal and Belmopan from International Airport and the Municipal Airstrip in Belize City. Charter flights can be arranged to these and other private airstrips in Belize, Guatemala and Honduras. Helicopter charters are available to all these destinations and more remote areas of Belize.

We have two flights daily between International and Flores, Guatemala, close to Tikal.

The first class bus from Cancun to Chetumal (our border city with Mexico) takes 6 hours.

We expect airlines to expand services and others to introduce new international and regional routes. So ask, there could be something new that will be more convenient for you.

Getting around Belize

Flying is the easiest and most time efficient method of travel in Belize. Reliable bus service links cities to towns and some villages. Taxis are always available.

Renting a vehicle and driving around Belize is easy and safe. Our main highways are paved and well marked with good signage indicating sites and attractions.

The bulk of the vehicle rental agencies are based at the International Airport and in Belize City, with just a few others in some of the districts. There are many of gas stations in the cities and along the Northern and Western Highways. Gas stations become scarcer in the south and it's best to top off your fuel before driving off road. Make sure your spare tire is in good condition and pack a flashlight if you drive at night. It's best to rent from a reliable rental agency.

You'll find Belizeans friendly and helpful, so just ask if you need direction or assistance.
